Laura Nordstrom, age 57 of Bayport, was arrested on Monday, Nov. 6, according to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
She faces multiple charges after officers claim she failed to provide a habitable home for her 14 cats and two dogs. In a statement, the SPCA described the situation as living in "squalor."
During a search warrant conducted by the SPCA and Suffolk County Police, the animals were removed from the home with help from the non-profit Paws Unite People.
Many of them were underweight, dehydrated, and covered in urine.
Additionally, Nordstrom’s home was strewn with urine, feces, mold, and mildew, investigators said.
The air quality was so poor that rescuing officers reported they had a difficult time breathing due to the ammonia.
Nordstrom is due to face her multiple animal cruelty charges in Central Islip’s First District Court on Friday, Nov. 24.
